Went to Dohuk Last Weekend

And all I got was an awesome Iraqi National Team jersey.

Actually, the trip was way sweeter than that.

Dohuk is a little enigma of a town.  It used to be a quiant little village best known for its colorful houses and then became the bustling, diesel-smelling hub for gas smugglings into Syria/Turkey in the 90s during the fascinatingly destructive oil-for-food programme (UN spelling).  Now it is rolling in that Turkey-Iraq trade money.  It is among the highest in per capita income for all of Iraq’s provinces and also has one of the lowest literacy rates. Despite that, it was really well managed, unlike Suli.

Also, visited the University of Dohuk and had tea with the Yazidi sheikh in charge of the temple at Lalish.  Working on a few stories to post this week.

Stay tuned.
